Southaven Real Estate Guide

Why Own Real Estate in Southaven

Southaven, MS is located within the Memphis Metropolitan area, just 14 miles south of Memphis. The city is bordered to the north and south by the I-55/I-69 freeway, making travel to nearby areas convenient.

Southaven was established in 1836 and officially incorporated in 1978, named because of its location south of Whitehaven. The city initially began as a village when Memphis homebuilder Kemmons Wilson (founder of Holiday Inn) wished to develop a few residential subdivisions with starter homes just across the Mississippi border from what was then Whitehaven, Tennessee. Southaven has since grown to be one of the largest cities in Mississippi with a population of ~56,000.

Sports are an integral part of the Southaven community. The city’s Snowden Grove Baseball Park has been host to the annual Dizzy Dean Baseball World Series which hosts teams across the country. The Landers Center in Southaven has hosted the Mississippi River Kings, the Memphis Grizzlies’ NBA G League affiliate (the Memphis Hustle), and the Memphis Americans (part of the National Indoor Soccer League). The city is also the site of the childhood home of well-known novelist John Grisham.

Each year, Southaven residents can enjoy several community festivals, and there are many popular attractions nearby such as:

  • Arkabutla Lake
  • Snowden Grove Park
  • Tanger Outlets
  • Landers Center
